This year's festival sees a greater involvement with the Artists Moving Image Exhibition (A.M.I.E.) curated by Contemporary Art Programming, with three very dramatic installations; The Holburne will house artist Andrew Mania’s Chisenhale Gallery and Picture This large-scale installation commission titled ‘Gogolin’ comprised of sculpture, painting and film. St. Michael’s Church will host Finnish artist Hannu Karjalainen’s installation ‘Man in a Blue Shirt’. Hannu is a Helsinki based artist working mainly with video and film installations. Walcot Chapel will host a slideshow of images by Magnum photographer Paolo Pellegrin, a looped installation on a large screen, set to music written by Patti Smith, lamenting a mother’s loss of her children to the ravages of war.

Along with the installations you will be able to see screenings of artists' films, including Matthew Barney's 'Drawing Restraint 9', and Jeremy Deller's 'Battle of Orgreave'.

During the festival we will be screening some of the best UK and international documentary features, including 'The Monastery' , 'Hearts and Minds' and 'Helvetica'. There will be a special focus on the craft of editing with a discussion on the topic of 'truth' in documentary filmmaking at the Editor's Forum. There is also a short course in documentary editing for those already proficient in Final Cut Pro.

This year we explore Polish Cinema with four of the best films from Eastern Europe, including the classic 'Ashes and Diamonds' and the very new 'Saviour's Square' a recent winner of the Polish Film Festival in Gdansk.

Once again we present a classic silent film, 'The Last Laugh', with a specially commissioned musical score written and performed by jazz pianist John Law, to be screened at the Michael Tippett Centre.

Finally, we are very pleased to welcome the London-based film festival Birds Eye View, who will be presenting an evening of short films made by women, we hope as a prelude to greater co-operation in the future.

This year's offering brings such variety and depth to all aspects of film that we are sure there is something in our programme for everyone. We have all worked very hard to bring these events to Bath, we hope you will try very hard to enjoy as many as possible.SF
