The first thing you might notice about this year’s festival is that it spans a shorter time period. This doesn’t mean we’re offering you fewer films in 2007. In fact, we’ve managed to fit almost the same number of screenings and events – about 50 - into eleven days as we did in 2006 into eighteen. In all we’re offering a more concentrated experience this year, which we hope will generate a real sense of celebration of cinema and the moving image.
Three strands characterise our programme for 2007. Arts Council England funding has enabled us to expand the space we devote to artists working with moving images, and three installations can be experienced during the festival as well as a number of artists’ films, brought to us by Contemporary Art Programming. South West Screen have supported the development of our Documentary Strand, which this year embraces eight screenings, an editing workshop, and a forum which will examine some of the fascinating issues thrown forward by recent accusations of ‘manipulation of the truth’ levelled at documentary filmmakers.
We’ve also included a season of Polish films, which will serve to throw some light on life inside one of our newest EU neighbours. Alongside these you’ll find a distinguished company of preview screenings, including Cannes Palm d’Or winner 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days, London Film Festival closer The Darjeeling Limited and the film that’s been leaving audiences worldwide with a huge smile on their faces The Band’s Visit – to name but three. Directors Terence Davies and Nicolas Roeg will be our guests, and jazz pianist John Law will be providing a live accompaniment to FW Murnau’s silent classic The Last Laugh.
We’ll also be urging you to submit your views about this year’s films to the festival website. Do tell us what you think, and we’ll let the world know via the website – prizes for the most incisive reviews. So don’t forget to take your notepad and pen to the screenings...
Happy viewing! CB
